In 2010, University YES Academy opened in the Winship community in the northwest section of Detroit. University YES Academy currently serves 6th – 8th grade students in our middle school. In the fall of 2013, University YES Academy High School (UYAHS) will open growing a grade each year until our first scholars matriculate from college in 2017. To complement our 6th – 12th grade school, UYA is planning to open an elementary school in the fall of 2013 to complete our K-12 UYA network.
University YES Academy schools’ mission is to provide our students with the academic and character skills they need to be accepted to and graduate from top colleges and universities. By providing an academically rigorous curriculum, warm-demanding learning environment, and “whatever it takes” attitude, University YES Academy has been able to make significant gains in student achievement at its middle school campus. Our schools are located in Detroit where the achievement gap is wide, and we know this because our scholars generally arrive at UYA two to three grade levels behind the national average of most 6th graders. We view this as an opportunity, because we deeply believe we can put our students on the path to college no matter their starting point or their zip code. Like most Detroiters, our scholars have a palpable sense of pride and are focused to rise above any challenge, including poverty and social circumstances that may have gotten in the way of their success. Our schools are embedded in the community to uplift and support the revitalization of Detroit through serve service. Our scholars serve as a proof-point that our children can rise above any challenge and compete with others across the country who are graduating from college and contributing to society.
At New Urban Learning, our schools are very committed to our work in Detroit. As we expand to include a full K-12 network with three distinct schools, we look forward to serving over 1,300 students over the next three years. We look forward to creating opportunities for Detroit’s children, and to also celebrating with our scholars when they receive their college degrees.
